Historical Timeline 1905 - Present

1905

The first library in Buena Park begins with books donated by Mrs. W.D. Hasson and Reverend Lasaures.  The books are housed in a room at the Lily Creamery (now Ganahl Lumber).

1907

The Lily Creamery closes in 1907 and Mrs. Hasson returns the small collection of books to her home at 7611 10th Street in Buena Park.

1917

Space is acquired for the library books in the H.E. Warren building located near the Southern Pacific Depot.

1919

The Buena Park Women’s Club works to establish the Buena Park Library District by circulating petitions for an election.  The election is successful and the Buena Park Library District is officially established.

1920

Land is purchased and a building is erected at Grand Avenue and Court Street, which housed a collection of 283 volumes. A governing board of trustees is appointed.  Anna Luebkeman becomes the first librarian.

1935

A new larger library building is constructed at Grand Avenue (now Beach Blvd.) and Court Street (now Pinchot Ct.)  The collection grows to 6,294 books.

1957

The library is remodeled when the Buena Park Civic Center is built on six acres of property adjoining the library on Grand Avenue ( Beach Blvd.)

The library building continues to expand in order to meet the growing needs of the community.

1962

The bookmobile is introduced.

1966-1977

The Beach Boulevard facility proves inadequate for expansion. Land is purchased on La Palma Avenue, where our current library still stands.

1969

The current library building at 7150 La Palma Avenue is dedicated in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Buena Park Library District.

1981

New technology is introduced at the library.

The COMCAT (short for Computer Output Microform Catalog) reader makes its way to the Buena Park Library.  Twelve COMCAT readers are purchased to assist patrons in finding books, replacing the old card catalog.

1986

The Buena Park Library produces its own television programming for all ages.  Programs include book talks, author interviews, and puppet shows.

2009

The Library’s computer center opens and the online catalog is launched.
